LEXINGTON, Ky.—Virginia junior Filip Mihaljevic and redshirt freshman Jack Lint broke school records as the UVA men’s track and field team concluded action at the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet Saturday (Jan. 23) at Nutter Field House in Lexington, Ky.
Milhaljevic (Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina) broke the ACC and school record en route to winning the shot put with a throw of 20.69m (67’ 10.75”), which ranks first in the country this season. The throw, which beat his previous school record by 3’ 5.25”, is also an Olympic-standard mark. Also in the shot put, redshirt freshman Oghenakpobo Efekoro (Brooklyn, N.Y.) placed fourth with a mark of 18.41m (60’ 4.75”), which ranks fifth on UVA’s all-time list and third on UVA’s freshman list.
“Based on how his (Filip) fall went, we expected something big to open up,” Virginia director of track and field/cross country Bryan Fetzer said. “I know how much the Olympic standard means to him as does the ACC record. He has matured so much as a thrower over the last two years, learning how to transition his emotions into performance.”
Lint (Westerville, Ohio) broke the school record in the heptathlon with 5,358 points, placing third. He tied or broke personal bests in six of the seven events. Senior Christian Lavorgna (Jefferson, N.J.) placed fifth with a score of 4,975 points, which ranks fourth on UVA’s all-time list.
“Jack is such a focused and driven individual,” Fetzer said. “His first comment after the competition was, ‘there is a lot more left.’ It is a good start to the season, but there is a ton of room for improvement.”
The Cavaliers went 1-2-3 in the mile, with freshman Robby Keough (Atlanta, Ga.) winning in a time of 4:12.22. Senior Adam Visokay (Ruckersville, Va.) won the second heat to take second overall in 4:13.40, while senior Evan Chiplock (Saginaw, Mich.) was third overall in 4:13.91.
Junior Henry Wynne (Westport, Conn.) finished fifth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:07.27, which ranks ninth on UVA’s all-time list. Junior Zach Herriott (Kansas City, Mo.) and redshirt freshman Chase Weaverling (Darnestown, Md.) were eighth (8:11.29) and ninth (8:12.61). Weaverling’s time ranks fourth on UVA’s freshman list. Sophomore Brent Demarest (Charleston, S.C.) and freshmen Matthew Novak (Glen Allen, Va.) and John Pace (Chantilly, Va.) placed 11th, 13th and 17th, respectively.
In the final event of the day, the 4x400m relay of Bowman, junior Nathan Kiley (Chantilly, Va.), sophomore Logan Carrington (Leesburg, Va.) and freshman Jake Dixon (Falmouth, Maine) finished sixth in a time of 3:13.56.
“We are in a great place to be in at this time of year,” Fetzer said. “We had some huge highlights, but have a number of areas where we have a substantial room for improvement. The team collectively is very young so over the first few competitions we will continue to teach and learn.”
The Cavaliers return to action Saturday (Jan. 30) for the John Thomas Terrier Invitational in Boston.
