LYNCHBURG, Va.—The No. 5 Virginia men’s track and field team won a pair of events at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational Saturday (Jan. 28) at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex in Lynchburg, Va.
Senior Henry Wynne (Westport, Conn.) made his season debut by winning the 3,000 meters in a time of 8:06.11, which is a new meet and facility record. Senior Zach Herriott (Kansas City, Mo.) was second in 8:07.18, while redshirt sophomore Chase Weaverling (Darnestown, Md.) and sophomore Alex Corbett (Burke, Va.) were third and fourth, resepectively.
The Cavaliers also posted a 1-2-3 finish in the mile, with junior Kenneth Hagen (Blackburg, Va.) winning in a time of 4:19.35, ahead of sophomore Robby Keough (Atlanta, Ga.) and freshman Randy Neish (Glastonbury, Conn.).
Redshirt freshman Sam Young (Lewes, Del.) placed third in the men’s pole vault, clearing a height of 5.00m (16’ 4.75”), which ranks fifth on UVA’s all-time list.
In the shot put, redshirt junior Filip Mihaljevic (Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina) made his season debut, finishing second with a mark of 19.47m (63’ 10.5”), which ranks in a tie for fourth in the nation. Junior Ogheankpobo Efekoro (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was third with a throw of 17.90m (58’ 8.75”), while sophomore Nace Plesko (Ljubljana, Slovenia) and junior James Williams (Radford, Va.) were fifth and sixth.
Freshman AJ Ernst (Marblehead, Mass.) placed third in the 800 meters in 1:54.80. In the 500 meters, junior Logan Carrington (Leesburg, Va.) and sophomore Charles Bowman (Harrisburg, Pa.) finished fourth (1:04.80) and fifth (1:05.66).
Redshirt junior Cam Collins (Calhoun, Ga.) finished in a tie for fourth in the high jump, clearing a personal-best mark of 1.94m (6’ 4.25”).
“It was the opener for a lot of our men, but those that had a competition under their belt this season made some nice progress,” UVA director of track and field/cross country Bryan Fetzer said. “We had some nice breakthroughs today by several men. We have a ways to go, but we are headed in the right direction. The only collegiate championships that is handed out in January is in college football, we need to keep that in mind.”
Next up, the Cavaliers travel to Boston for a pair of meets. UVA will compete at the Crimson Elite Meet hosted by Harvard on Feb. 3 and the Scarlett & White Meet hosted by Boston University on Feb. 4.
