ANN ARBOR, Mich.
-  The Virginia women’s track and field team concluded the final day of competition at the Power Five Invitational, hosted by Michigan, on Saturday (Feb. 3) at the U-M Indoor Track Building in Ann Arbor, Mich.

“The program is built a lot more for team success in the outdoor season, but we can’t lose focus, individually, throughout indoors and what can be accomplished in a few weeks (at ACC’s),”
director of track and field Bryan Fetzer said.

Junior Kelly McKee (Lenexa, Kan.) and redshirt junior Mia Barron (Minnetonka, Minn.) paced the Cavaliers, competing in the long jump and triple jump. McKee finished first in the triple jump, setting a stadium record with a mark of 12.73m (41’9.25”). In the long jump she finished fourth with a mark of 5.81m (19’0.75”). Barron finished second in the long jump with a mark of 5.93m (19’5.5”) and fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 12.41m (40’8.75”).

“Kelly (McKee) has shown great consistency in the triple jump so far this season,” assistant coach Mario Wilson said. “She is ready for a breakthrough and looks forward to competing at Clemson next week.”

Sophomore Alexis Woodley (Chesapeake, Va.) and junior Ciara Leonard (Elkins Park, Pa.) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the finals of the 60m hurdles. Woodley’s time of 8.41 was a personal best. Leonard recorded a time of 8.60.

Sophomore Anna Jefferson (Warren, Mich.) placed fifth in the finals of the 60m dash, recording a time of 7.54. Jefferson’s time was a personal record and tied for seventh on Virginia’s all-time performance list.

In the pole vault, senior Bridget Guy (Greensburg, Pa.) finished 10th, clearing a height of 3.87m (12’8.25’), while senior Katie Freix (Chantilly, Va.) placed 13th, clearing a personal-best height of 3.87m (12’8.26”).

Freshman Gabrielle Hayes (Woodbridge, Va.) led the Cavaliers in the high jump, placing seventh with a personal-best record of 1.64m (5’4.5”). Junior Carly Feyerabend (Mechanicsville, Va.) finished ninth with a mark of 1.59m (5’2.5”).

Freshman Brittany Jones (Bloomfield, Conn.) placed ninth in the shot put with a mark of 14.58m (47’10”).

“Jefferson and (Jade) Baker are two that made big steps this weekend into becoming who they are capable of being from an athletic sense,” Fetzer said about the weekend. “Hopefully that is a turning point for them.”

The Cavaliers will return on February 9, competing at the Tiger Paw Invitational in Clemson, S.C., and the Valentine’s Invitational in Boston, Mass.
