BLACKSBURG, Va.—Several personal bests highlighted the Virginia women’s track and field team’s action Friday (Feb. 5) at the Doc Hale Elite Meet at Rector Field House.
In the pentathlon, freshmen Alana Herran (Orange, N.J.) and Holly Sullivan (Chester Springs, Pa.) went 1-2 with scores of 3,393 and 3,388, which rank third and fourth on UVA’s all-time freshman list, respectively. Both student-athletes hit personal records in all five events.
"Our combined student-athletes went 4-for-4 in PRs this weekend, which is exactly what you want," UVA director of track and field/cross country Bryan Fetzer said. "They all have shown tremendous progress each week."
Senior Peyton Chaney (Belleville, Ill.) finished third in the 60 meters in 7.49, which ranks in a tie for fourth on the UVA’s all-time list.
"Peyton has been diligent on her start, which was excellent in both races," Fetzer said. "She made a good race adjustment after the prelims that made the difference in the finals."
In the pole vault, sophomore Katie Freix (Chantilly, Va.) finished fourth with a mark of 3.70m (12’ 1.5”), while redshirt freshman Kate Kaufman (Chatanooga, Tenn.) placed seventh at a height of 3.55m (11’ 7.75”), which ranks eighth on UVa’s all-time list and third on the Cavalier freshman list.
"Katie competed well today," UVA assistant coach Mario Wilson said. "Her technique is improving consistently. She has a lot of natural talent so it is only a matter of time before things start to really click for her."
Junior Heather Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) finished 11th in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.66, which ranks sixth on UVA’s all-time list, while freshman Kiana Leonard (Elkins Park, Pa.) placed 15th in 8.85, which ranks tied for fourth on UVa’s all-time freshman list.
In the open 400 meters, junior Andrea Wright (Chesapeake, Va.) finished third in 56.52, while Smith was sixth in 57.05.
In the 800 meters, sophomore Micah Brickhill (Buckingham, Va.) placed eighth in 2:13.68.
The action continues at 11 a.m. Saturday.
