BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia track and field teams had a strong performance at the Doc Hale Virginia Tech Elite Meet on Friday and Saturday at the Rector Field House. The Cavalier first-years headlined the meet, including Bridget Guy (Greensburg, Pa.) breaking the school record in the women's pole vault.

"It was a good performance overall," said assistant coach Mario Wilson. "The pole vaulters had a great day, including a school record for Bridget. They competed well and were getting better with each meet. We are only three meets into the year, but they are performing like veterans."

Guy broke the school record by clearing 12' 8.75" to win the unseeded flight of the event. It was the sixth school record set by the Cavaliers this year. Katie Freix (Chantilly, Va.) had a PR of 11' 10.75", the second-best freshman mark and third-best mark overall in school history. Sarah DeVita (Ridgewood, N.J.) also cleared 11' 10.75", tying Freix for third-best all-time at UVa.

First-year Mia Barron (Minnetonka, Minn.) was second in the women's triple jump with a season-best of 40' 5", tying the second-best freshman mark and the ninth-best overall mark in school history.

"Mia is continuing to improve and took another positive step forward today," said Wilson. "For her to have an indoor best at this point of the year is impressive."

Peyton Chaney (Belleville, Ill.) reached the final of the women's 60m, tying her PR of 7.60. In the final, she eclipsed that time by running 7.59 to finish sixth, the ninth-best time in school history.

Four athletes competed on Saturday. Heather Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) had a PR in the women's 400m with a time of 57.00.
