BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia men's and women's track and field teams concluded competition Saturday at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet, their final action before the ACC Championships will be held at the same facility.
"I am glad we had this opportunity to come compete in the same facility where we will be in two weeks for ACC's," said head coach Bryan Fetzer. "This meet was a very good gauge of where we are at this point. With two weeks before the ACC Championships, we have a lot to work but at the same time progress is being made by some individuals."
Virginia won one event at the meet as Bryan Lewis won the men's 5000m in a time of 14:59.24. Jack St. Marie was third as the Cavaliers took two of the three top spots. Ryan Satchell was fourth in the men's triple jump in a field that included the top two ranked triple-jumpers in the nation. Britni Strates made the finals of the women's triple jump, jumping a season-best 39'-1.25" to finish eighth. Tommy DeVita tied a personal best of 6'8.75" in the men's high jump to finish ninth.
"We need to learn to be more consistent in our performances overall as a team," said Fetzer. "It would be easy to say because we are young you can make mistakes and it is okay, but championship programs perform when you have the opportunity against whoever it might be. It is the lesson we need to learn."
Five Cavaliers will compete later Saturday at the Husky Classic in Seattle.
The Cavaliers will have next weekend off before traveling back to Blacksburg Feb. 21-23 for the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships.
