UVA Women Complete Action at Fastrack National Qualifier

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.—The Virginia women’s track and field team earned six top-3 finishes at the Fastrack National Qualifier Invite Friday (Feb. 12) in Staten Island, N.Y., at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.

"It was a solid performance overall," UVA director of track and field/cross country Bryan Fetzer said. "Christine (Bohan) and Peyton (Chaney) really stepped up today. When you consistently do the right things, it pays off."

Senior Peyton Chaney (Belleville, Ill.) won the 200 meters in a time of 23.84, which ranks second on UVA's all-time list. Junior Tori McKenzie (Chatham, Va.) placed eighth in 24.77.

Junior Cleo Boyd (Kingston, Ontario) won the 5,000 meters in a time of 16:30.61, while junior Maria Hauger (Shakopee, Minn.) placed fifth in 17:08.44.

The 4x400-meter relay of juniors Heather Smith (Chesapeake, Va.), Andrea Wright (Chesapeake, Va.) and Chimere Ezumah (Gardena, Calif.) and Chaney (Belleville, Ill.) placed first in 3:44.25.



In the shot put, junior Christine Bohan (Avon Lake, Ohio) finished second with a mark of 16.50m (54’ 1.75”), which ranks second on UVA’s all-time list and is currently No. 3 in the conference and tied for No. 19 in the country.

Graduate student Iona Lake (Norwich, England) placed second in the mile in a personal record of 4:42.64, which ranks eighth on UVA’s all-time list.

Sophomore Bridget Guy (Greensburg, Pa.) finished second in the pole vault with a height of 4.05m (13’ 3.5”), while sophomore Katie Freix (Chantilly, Va.) was sixth at 3.75m (12’ 3.75”). Redshirt freshman Kate Kaufman placed 11th with a personal-record height of 3.60m (11’ 10”), putting her in a tie for sixth on UVA’s all-time list and third on UVA’s freshman list.

In the 60 hurdles, Smith finished fifth while matching her season-best time of 8.66. Freshman Ciara Leonard (Elkins Park, Pa.) placed seventh in 8.74, which ranks ninth on UVA’s all-time list and third on the Cavalier all-time freshman list.

Sophomore Caroline Clark (Washington, D.C.) crossed the line fifth in the 800 meters in a season-best time of 2:10.30.

In the 3,000 meters, graduate student Sarah Astin (Isle of Man, Great Britain) placed ninth in 9:40.91.

Next up, the distance medley relays will be highlighted at the UCS Invitational Feb. 20 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
