AMES, Iowa & ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Virginia men's track and field team concluded strong performances Saturday at the Iowa State Classic and the Don Kirby Elite Meet. The Cavaliers set numerous PRs and top-ten all-time performances at both meets.

"We made progress this weekend in a lot of areas, some learning from mistakes and others from performances," said head coach Bryan Fetzer. "We are way ahead of where we were at this point last year but we need to continue to be focused in the process and trust it."

Jordan Young (Windsor, Ontario), who broke the school record in the weight throw a day earlier, continued his strong season by winning the shot put. His mark of 62' 10" is the second-best mark in school history, trailing just teammate Filip Mihaljevic's (Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina) school record of 64' 5" from earlier this year.

"What a weekend for Jordan," said Fetzer. "He has something to prove and is doing it."

Payton Hazzard (Huntington, N.Y.) was second in the 400m, crossing in a time of 46.68, just .08 off his school record time from earlier this year.

Kyle King (Yorktown, Va.) moved into the top-five all-time at Virginia with his performance in the 3000m, crossing in a time of 8:00.23.

In the mile, Mike Marsella (Hope Valley, R.I.) was 10th in a time of 4:01.19, a week after breaking the four-minute barrier. Henry Wynne (Westport, Conn.) finished in 4:09.86.

"We lost sight of racing to win and instead focused on times," said Fetzer. "It is a trap that athletes fall into. If you win races or put yourself in that position, the times will come."

At the Don Kirby Elite Meet in Albuquerque, the Cavalier jumpers and multi-event athletes were in action. Daniel Hamm (Wytheville, Va.) had a PR in the triple jump with a mark of 47' 7.25" and Christian Lavorgna (Jefferson, N.J.) had a PR in the 60m hurdles at 8.56.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Feb. 21 as they send athletes to compete in the distance medley relay at the Alex Wilson Invitational at Notre Dame.
