Day One Results

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia men's and women's track and field teams began competition Thursday on day one of the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Virginia Tech at Rector Field House. After one event, the women are in fourth place, while the men's meet hasn't completed any events yet.

Thursday's schedule consisted of the women's pentathlon and the first day of the men's heptathlon. Anna Finger finished fourth in the women's pentathlon with 3,659 points, the sixth highest score in school history. Abbie McKinney finished 12th with 3,247 points.

"Anna had a great performance," said head coach Bryan Fetzer. "She came away with PRs in four of the five events, including winning the long jump portion of the pentathlon. That says a lot about where she is in her transition from a jumper to doing the multis. I was really proud of how she finished the event in the 800. She put herself in position to be successful and set a PR by six seconds."

Two Cavaliers are competing in the men's heptathlon. After the first day, which consisted of the 60m, long jump, shot put and high jump, Christian Lavorgna is eighth with 2,479 points and John Michael Pirtle is 11th with 2,124 points. The heptathlon concludes Friday with the 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1000m.

"Christian finished up the day very well," said Fetzer. "He scored in the ACC meet last season and put himself in good position to do so again this year. John Michael is in his first heptathlon. He had no height in the high jump and obviously feels terrible about that. He is going to be a great one for us down the road and sometimes going through something like that, while tough, can teach you some good lessons."

The meet continues Friday with action beginning at 11 a.m. The meet concludes on Saturday with action beginning at 11 a.m. Live coverage of Friday and Saturday's events will be available at theacc.com.
