BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia women's track and field team continued competition Friday at the 2015 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships at Rector Field House. Bridget Guy (Greensburg, Pa.) and Sarah DeVita (Ridgewood, N.J.) both set a school record in the pole vault and several Cavaliers advanced to event finals to highlight the day for the Cavaliers.
After seven events, the Cavaliers are in 13th place with 6.5 points. North Carolina leads the competition with 48.5 points.
The Cavalier pole vaulters had another strong performance, as Guy and DeVita both set a school record at 3.97m (13-0.25). Guy finished in sixth place at the meet and DeVita was tied for eighth as both earned points for Virginia. Katie Freix (Chantilly, Va.) had a PR of 12-6.25, to move into third on the Cavalier all-time list, behind her two record-setting teammates.
"The women's vault continues to get better every meet and it is fun to see their energy," said head coach Bryan Fetzer. "They compete with a lot of passion. For Sarah DeVita, in her final ACC indoor meet, to score after all she overcome brings a tear to your eyes. We are so excited with the progress all three of them have been making."
Lavender, the reigning ACC champion in the 400m, advanced to the finals of that event with a time of 54.28 in the prelims. It was the fourth-fastest time of Friday's prelims. She then had the third-fastest time in the prelims in the 200m, crossing the line in 23.92.
Chaney advanced to the final of the 60m with a PR of 7.52, moving her into sixth place on Virginia's all-time list. She also reached the 200m final with a time of 24.17, the seventh-best time of the prelims.
"Our go-to athletes making the finals in both the events they were in is a strong performance," said Fetzer. "Today was really about advancing and when you advance to the finals then you can score points."
In the 800m, Vanessa Fabrizio (Denver, Colo.) just missed a place in the final, finishing ninth in the preliminaries. The day concluded with the 5000m as Morgan Kelly (San Francisco, Calif.) finished 11th and Sarah Fakler (Phoenix, Ariz.) finished 14th.
The meet concludes Saturday with field events (shot put, men's pole vault, triple jump) starting at 10 a.m. and running events (finals of the 60m, 200m, 400m, 800m, mile, 3000m and the 4x400m relay) starting at noon. Live coverage of Saturday's events begins at noon on ESPN3.
