BOSTON—The Virginia women’s track and field team finished ninth at the ACC Indoor Championships Saturday (Feb. 27) at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston.
The Cavaliers finished ninth with 37 points. Miami won the meet with 85 points, followed by Clemson (83) and Notre Dame (82).
In the mile, graduate student Iona Lake (Norwich, England) came from behind to pass three other competitors in the final lap to win at the finish line in a time of 4:36.11. Lake’s time ranks fifth on UVA’s all-time list and is a personal record by over six seconds. The time also ranks eighth in the nation. It is Lake’s second ACC title after winning the 3,000m steeplechase at the 2015 ACC Outdoor Championships.
“Running a big personal best in a championship meet is what you work towards,” UVA distance coach Todd Morgan said. “I am really proud of her and how tough she competed today.”
In the 60 meters, senior Peyton Chaney recorded a PR of 7.40 to finish third. In the 200 meters, Chaney placed sixth in a time of 23.91.
“We knew going in that our older student-athletes needed to have great performances and we got that today from Iona (Lake) and Peyton (Chaney),” UVA director of track and field/cross country Bryan Fetzer said. “I couldn’t be happier with them to go out and end the indoor season with a bang. With that mile run, Iona will have a ton of confidence going into her primary event, the steeplechase, and Peyton now has a lot of confidence as well.”
Junior Christine Bohan (Avon Lake, Ohio) placed second in the shot put with a personal-record throw of 16.53m (54’ 2.75”), which ranks second on UVA’s all-time list.
Junior Cleo Boyd (Kingston, Ontario) placed 11th in the 3,000 meters in 9:30.72, while Lake was 14th in 9:32.63.
The meet also signified the women's indoor track and field matchup between Virginia and Virginia Tech in the Commonwealth Clash, sponsored by Virginia529, the official college savings plan of University of Virginia Athletics. By way of finishing higher in the team standings, UVA earned one point in the Virginia529 Commonwealth Clash, the point rivalry series between UVA and Virginia Tech. Virginia now leads the 2015-16 Commonwealth Clash, 7-3.5. Learn more about Virginia529 and this competition at thecommonwealthclash.com.
