Cavaliers Finish 23rd at NCAA Indoor Championships

Filip Mihaljevic

March 14, 2015

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Virginia men's track and field team concluded its indoor season Saturday with the final day of the 2015 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Randal Tyson Track Complex on the campus of the University of Arkansas. The Cavaliers finished the meet tied for 23rd place with eight points, the third-best finish at the meet in program history.

The Cavaliers' 23rd-place finish was the best among ACC schools at the meet.

"Overall, this was a big step for the men's program to finish 23rd and contribute to the department's efforts in the Directors Cup," said head coach Bryan Fetzer. "In our sport there is not much time to dwell. We open the outdoor season next weekend and we can't wait."

Redshirt-freshman Filip Mihaljevic (Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina) was the only Cavalier in action Saturday, finishing 14th in the shot put. The only underclassman in the 16-man field, he had a mark of 18.40m (60-4.5) on his first attempt of the evening, but had fouls on his next two tries and did not advance to the finals.

"Filip came out a bit flat tonight," said Fetzer. "On this stage you can't leave any attempts out there. He has to learn to compete regardless of the emotional state, which will come with experience."

Virginia scored eight points during Friday's competition. Jordan Young (Windsor, Ontario) was fourth in the weight throw and the quartet of Henry Wynne (Westport, Conn.), Payton Hazzard (Huntington, N.Y.), Nathan Kiley (Chantilly, Va.) and Mike Marsella (Hope Valley, R.I.) finished sixth in the distance medley relay.

The Cavaliers open the outdoor season next Saturday (March 21) as it hosts the Virginia Cup at Lannigan Field.
