RICHMOND, Va.—The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams finished action on the first day of the Fred Hardy Invitational Friday (March 25) at Robins Stadium in Richmond, Va.

In the women’s 400 hurdles, junior Heather Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) placed third in 59.41, which ranks seventh on UVA’s all-time list. Freshman Charles Bowman (Harrisburg, Pa.) finished third in the men’s 400 hurdles in 53.43.

“Heather had a solid race today,” UVA assistant coach Willie Randolph said. “To maintain her composure against top competition including a world champion (Jernail Hayes – 4x400m relay for U.S. at the 2014 World Indoor Championships), speaks volumes about where she is mentally and physically right now. We still have a lot of improvements to make, but today we are grateful for a personal-best time.”

Freshman Carly Feyerabend (Mechanicsville, Va.) won her first collegiate women’s outdoor high jump competition with a height of 1.65m (5’ 5”). Senior Jessica Caldwell (Owings Mill, Md.) placed second in the women’s triple jump with a leap of 11.70m (38’ 4.75”).

In the women’s pole vault, sophomores Bridget Guy (Greensburg, Pa.) and Katie Freix (Chantilly, Va.) went 1-2 with both hitting a mark of 3.75m (12’ 3.75”). Freix hitting 3.75m moves her into third on UVA’s all-time list.

Senior Christian Lavorgna (Jefferson, N.J.) finished third in the men’s pole vault with a height of 4.45m (14’ 7.25”), while junior Anthony Dunavant (Franklin, Tenn.) and redshirt sophomore Cam Collins (Calhoun, Ga.) finished seventh and eighth with a height of 4.15m (13’ 7.5”).

The action continues Saturday (March 26) with field events at 10 a.m. and track events at 11 a.m.
