RICHMOND, Va.—The No. 8 Virginia men's track and field team won three events and the Cavalier women picked up two event wins on the final day of the Fred Hardy Invitational Saturday (March 26) at Robins Stadium in Richmond, Va.

The Cavaliers went 1-2-3 in the women’s 100 hurdles with junior Heather Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) winning in a time of 13.88, which ranks fifth on UVA’s all-time list. Freshman Ciara Leonard (Elkins Park, Pa.) was second in 14.23, which is fifth on UVA’s freshman list, while fellow freshman Alana Herran (Orange, N.J.) was third in 14.42.

Freshman Charles Bowman (Harrisburg, Pa.) won the 110 hurdles in 14.81, while fellow freshman Emmanuel Jackson (Raleigh, N.C.) was seventh in 15.62.

Freshman Devin Barnes captured the men’s 800 meters title in 1:52.73. Junior Micah Brickhill (Buckingham, Va.) crossed the line first in the women’s 800 meters in 2:12.61.

Freshman Charlie Lambert (Brooklyn, N.Y.) won the men’s long jump with a leap of 6.88m (22’ 6.75”). Redshirt-freshman Mia Barron (Minnetonka, Minn.) placed second in the women’s long jump with a mark of 5.76m (18’ 10.5”).

“We are very pleased with the overall performances today,” UVA director of track and field/cross country Bryan Fetzer said. “Since the weather didn't cooperate last weekend, we really wanted to give the outdoor specific eventers an opportunity to get one under their belts, especially our first-years before the intensity in competition goes up.

“Winning is something that doesn't come easy at any level, so to come away with some individual victories shows progress. Next week, things rise quickly to a different level in Gainesville. I’m confident that we are ready for that challenge.”

In the women’s 400 meters, graduate student Aisha Naibe-Wey (London, England) made her Cavalier debut and finished second in 55.75.

Sophomore James Williams (Radford, Va.) finished second in the men’s discus with a personal-best mark of 49.59m (162’ 8.25”), while redshirt-sophomore Cam Collins (Calhoun, Ga.) was seventh with a personal-best throw of 45.18m (148’ 2.75”).

The men’s 4x400-meter relay of Bowman, Collins, senior Christian Lavorgna (Jefferson, N.J.) and junior Anthony Dunavant (Franklin, Tenn.) placed third in 3:19.21.

In the men’s 100 meters, senior Scott Clarke (Devonshire, Bermuda) placed eighth in 11.14.

Next up, the Cavaliers compete at the Florida Relays March 31-April 2 in Gainesville, Fla.
