CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.--The No. 3 Virginia men's track and field team won seven events en route to a sweep at the UVA Quad Friday (April 8) at Lannigan Field.

The Cavaliers defeated No. 23 Penn, 85-44, in dual-meet scoring and were victorious against Maryland (92-34) and Columbia (96-27) as well.

"Being at Lannigan Field is a huge plus for us, because our men love competing at home," UVA director of track and field/cross country Bryan Fetzer said. "They are very focused on progressing each week. We have high expectations and each week, we are one step closer to reaching them."

In the 5,000 meters, junior Henry Wynne (Westport, Conn.) finished first in a time of 13:49.35, which ranks third on UVA's all-time list, while sophomore Chase Weaverling (Darnestown, Md.) was second in 14:01.20, which ranks ninth.

Junior Mike Marsella (Hope Valley, R.I.) won the 1,500 meters in a time of 3:50.99. Redshirt-sophomore Aaron Worrell (Fort Eustis, Va.) finished first in the long jump with a leap of 7.22m (23' 8.25").

Three freshmen picked up individual victories, with Hilmar Jonsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) winning the hammer throw with a distance of 66.07m (216' 9"). Freshman Oghenakpobo Efekoro (Brooklyn, N.Y.) captured the shot put title with a throw of 18.35m (60' 2.5"), while fellow freshman Charles Bowman (Harrisburg, Pa.) won the 110m hurdles in a season-best time of 14.59.

Sophomore Anthony Bouselli (Hawley, Pa.) captured the final event of the meet, the javelin, with a mark of 59.97m (196' 9").

Junior Filip Mihaljevic (Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina) placed second in the discus with a throw of 62.02m (203' 6"). Mihaljevic finished second only to the NCAA leader in the event, Sam Mattis of Penn.

"It was a great discus competition with the two best in the NCAA," Fetzer said. "That will not be the last time Sam and Filip go head-to-head."

The Cavaliers host the Lou Onesty/Milton G. Abramson Invitational Saturday (April 9) at 2 p.m. at Lannigan Field. Admission is free to the public.
