CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-  The Virginia women's track and field program closed the Virginia Challenge on Saturday (April 21) at Lannigan Field with a UVA freshman record from Brittany Jones (Bloomfield, Conn.) in the shot put.

Jones posted a mark of 15.69m (51'5.75") with her third attempt. She placed third in the competition, recording the fourth-best performance in school history.

"I am impressed with how we accepted the challenge on so many levels," director of track and field Bryan Fetzer said. "We need to build on it next week and not take the foot off of the gas."

Junior Kelly McKee (Lenexa, Kan.) placed second in the long jump. McKee posted a career-best mark of 6.12m (20'1"), tying the 10th-best performance in school history.

In the 100m hurdles, sophomore Alexis Woodley (Chesapeake, Va.) ran a career-best time of 13.44 to finish third in the event. Junior Ciara Leonard (Elkins Park, Pa.) captured the meet's fifth-best time, finishing with a time of 13.50.

Junior Alana Herran (Orange, N.J.) finished sixth in the 400m hurdle invitational with a time of 59.40.

The 4x400m relay team of senior Kiana Hairston (Manassas, Va.), Herran, Woodley and sophomore Anna Jefferson (Warren, Mich.), respectively, finished fifth with a season-best time of 3:41.43.

"The meet continues to be a success and improves," Fetzer said. "Just look at the performances. We have a great facility, crew and officials. I couldn't do it without their help."

Virginia will host its last regular season meet of the year, the Grand Prix, on April 28. The meet will be a part of Virginia's Wahoo Weekend. Free Ben & Jerry's ice cream will be available to all fans starting at 3 p.m., while supplies last.
