CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The UVA women’s track and field team concluded action on the first day of the Virginia Challenge at a rainy Lannigan Field Friday (April 22).

“Today was a valuable experience for our women, competing against high-level competition in non-ideal conditions,” Virginia director of track and field/cross country Bryan Fetzer said. “This will help us better prepare for the championship portion of the season. Tomorrow is shaping up to be a great day for the Cavaliers.”

Redshirt freshman Mia Barron (Minnetoka, Minn.) placed third in the triple jump with a mark of 12.40m (40’ 8.25”), which ranks fourth on UVA’s all-time freshman list.

In the shot put invite, junior Christine Bohan (Avon Lake, Ohio) finished third with a throw of 15.92m (52’ 2.75”).

Sophomore Katie Freix (Chantilly, Va.) matched her PR in the pole vault, finishing fourth with a height of 3.75m (12’ 3.5”).

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, graduate student Iona Lake (Norwich, England) placed 10th in 10:23.24.

The 4x100-meter relay of juniors Heather Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) and Andrea Wright (Chesapeake, Va.), senior Peyton Chaney (Belleville, Ill.) and junior Tori McKenzie (Chatham, Va.) placed sixth in 45.84

The action continues Saturday at 9 a.m. with the main event scheduled for 7-10:30 p.m.
