CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The No. 4 Virginia men’s track and field team finished action on the first day of the Virginia Challenge Friday (April 22) at rainy Lannigan Field.

“We had a bunch of positives under non-ideal conditions,” Virginia director of track and field/cross country Bryan Fetzer said. “Our men showed a lot of maturity and it will translate well to later in the year in the championship portion of the season when we are in locations where weather could again be a factor. Tomorrow is shaping up to be a great day for the Cavaliers.”

Junior Filip Mihaljevic (Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina) won the discus throw with a mark of 62.07m (203’ 7”), while fellow junior Jordan Young (Windsor, Ontario) made his season debut with a third-place finish and a throw of 56.55m (185’ 6”).

Redshirt sophomore Aaron Worrell (Fort Eustis, Va.) placed fourth in the triple jump invite with a mark of 15.70m (51’ 6.25”), which ranks No. 20 in the NCAA this year and fifth on UVA’s all-time list.

Junior Jeff Jernigan (DeKalb, Ga.) reached a PR in the pole vault, finishing fourth with a height of 4.70m (15’ 5”).

In the 800 meters, junior Nathan Kiley (Chantilly, Va.) was 11th in a time of 1:49.31, which ranks 10th on UVA’s all-time list.

Halfway through the decathlon, redshirt sophomore Cam Collins (Calhoun, Ga.) sits third with 3,668 points after recorded personal records in the first three events (100 meters, long jump, shot put).

The action continues Saturday at 9 a.m. with the main event scheduled for 7-10:30 p.m.
