UVA Performances at Virginia Challenge Rank Among Nation's Best

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Virginia men's track and field team opened day one of the Virginia Challenge at Lannigan Field on Friday (April 21) with two athletes recording the nation's second-best performance in an event. Redshirt junior Filip Mihaljevic (Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina) and freshman Jordan Scott (Portmore, Jamaica) earned the national placement in the shot put and the triple jump, respectively.

Both athletes finished first in their events. Mihaljevic's shot put of 20.52 meters (67-4) broke the Lannigan Field record and the Virginia Challenge record. Scott recorded a personal best performance of 16.44 meters (53-11.25). His jump places him second in UVA history.

Also competing in the shot put, redshirt sophomore Oghenakpobo Efekoro (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recorded a distance of 20.15 meters (66-1.5) for third place. The event also featured the nation's fourth-best performance of 20.33 meters (66-8.5) from Georgia's Danzel Comenentia.

Senior Nathan Kiley (Chantilly, Va.) had a first-place finish in the 400 meters. His race of 47.33 was a personal best.



In the pole vault, redshirt junior Jeff Jernigan (DeKalb, Ga.) moved to third on UVA's top performance list. He cleared 5.13 meters (16-10) for third place in the event.

Sophomores Hilmar Jonsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) and Nace Plesko (Ljubljana, Slovenia) notched second-place finishes in the meet. Jonsson threw for 70.31 meters (230-8), securing a season best in the hammer. Plesko had a personal best throw in the discus, recording a distance of 51.99 meters (170-7).

Day two of the Virginia Challenge will begin tomorrow at 9 a.m.
