Cavalier Track & Field Continues Competition at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA - The Virginia men's and women's track and field teams continued competition Friday at the Penn Relays at Franklin Field. The Cavaliers had four top-10 finishes during the second day of the prestigious meet.

In the men's college shot put, Filip Mihaljevic (Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina) had the highest finish of the day for Virginia, placing fourth with a mark of 63-1.5.

The women's 4x200m relay of Peyton Chaney (Belleville, Ill.), Kiana Hairston (Manassas, Va.), Tori McKenzie (Chatham, Va.) and Jordan Lavender (Nashville, Tenn.) won their heat, but finished 10th overall with a time of 1:37.89. The Cavaliers missed a place in Saturday's Championship of America final by .18 seconds, as the top nine teams from Friday qualified.

In the men's sprint medley relay of the Championship of America Invitational, the Cavaliers finished 10th. The team of Scott Clarke (Devonshire, Bermuda), David Bartha (Bonyhad, Hungary), Logan Carrington (Leesburg, Va.) and Nathan Kiley (Chantilly, Va.) crossed in a time of 3:25.93.

The Cavalier women also ran the sprint medley relay in the Championship of America Invitational. The quartet of McKenzie, Hairston, Heather Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) and Vanessa Fabrizio (Denver, Colo.) finished 16th with a time of 4:02.92, the fifth-fastest time in school history.



Devin Brewer (Dumfries, Va.) opened the day for Virginia with a 39th-place finish in the men's college 400m hurdles, crossing in a time of 56.02. Moira Cronin (Andover, Mass.) was 10th in the college women's high jump, clearing a season-high 5-7. Cailtin Mautz (Doylestown, Pa.) was 15th in the college women's javelin with a mark of 136-6.

The Cavaliers will have two athletes in action at the Penn Relays on Saturday. Mihaljevic will compete in the men's discus and Ryan Satchell (Central Islip, N.Y.) will compete in the men's triple jump.
