Mihaljevic Sets UVa Discus Record on Final Day of Penn Relays

Filip Mihaljevic

April 25, 2015

PHILADELPHIA - The Virginia men's and women's track and field teams concluded competition Saturday at the Penn Relays at Franklin Field. Only two Cavaliers were in action on the final day of the meet, including Filip Mihaljevic (Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina), who broke his own school record in the men's discus.

Mihaljevic finished second in the meet with a mark of 63.11m (207-0), bettering the school record he set last week by over five feet. He was runner-up to LSU's Rodney Brown, the national leader in the event. Mihaljevic ranks second in the nation in the discus.

"I told to Filip after last week's PR in discus that he could go over 63 meters in still conditions with few technical changes," said assistant coach Martin Maric. "Today it took him until the last throw to find what I was looking for in his discus technique and sure enough, the throw was over 63 meters. What I was more satisfied to see though was Filip's ability to incorporate necessary technical changes between the throws during the competition. As he becomes more efficient in that, it will be more and more difficult for anyone to surpass him, and today it was only one person, the NCAA leader in discus. There are great things ahead of us."

The only other Cavalier in action Saturday was Ryan Satchell (Central Islip, N.Y.) in the men's triple jump. He took two jumps, finishing 10th with a mark of 14.68m (48-2). Satchell passed on his final attempt as a precaution due to a slight injury.

Virginia will have two weeks off before hosting the Virginia Grand Prix on May 8 at Lannigan Field. That meet comes one week prior to the ACC Outdoor Championships in Tallahassee, Fla.

"I'm excited to get home and back to business," said head coach Bryan Fetzer. "We've made considerable progress so far and are very focused for championship part of our season."
