Atlanta, Ga.- The UVA women's track and field team concluded the first day of competition at the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday (May 12) at George C. Griffin Track and Field Facility in Atlanta Ga.

The Cavaliers recorded nine points to rank sixth in the competition. Virginia Tech leads the field with 43.5 points. Duke ranks second with 42 points followed by Louisville in third with 15. Notre Dame and Florida State are tied for fourth with 10 points.

With a strong showing, UVA placed three student-athletes in the finals of the javelin. Sophomore Marija Bogavac (Mojkovac, Montenegro) led the group finishing fifth. She recorded a distance of 48.96m (160-7). Senior Christine Bohan (Avon Lake, Ohio) placed sixth with a personal-best mark of 48.03m (157-7), while junior Caitlin Mautz (Doylestown, Pa.) finished seventh with an effort of 47.86m (157-0).

"To have three (athletes) score in the javelin this year is great," head coach Bryan Fetzer said. "It was one of the stronger events on the women's side. I was super proud of Christine (Bohan) stepping up and having a PR (personal record). Marija (Bogavac), in her first competition of the season in the javelin, put up an NCAA qualifying mark, and Mautz came back on her last throw to improve a mark. Overall it was phenomenal for the women's team."

In the prelims of the 1,500 meters, graduate student Carly Hamilton (Springboro, Ohio) recorded a time of 4:25.43. Her effort qualifies her for Sunday's finals at 5:20 p.m.

Senior Heather Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) recorded a season-best run in the preliminary race of the 400m hurdles. She advanced to Sunday's finals (7 p.m.) with a time of 59.21. She will be seeded eighth in the event.

The ACC Championships will continue tomorrow (May 13) with action beginning at 11 a.m. ACC Network Extra will stream events beginning at 5:30 p.m.
