No. 7 UVA Leads Opening Day of ACC Track Championships

Atlanta, Ga. - The No. 7 Virginia men's track and field team leads the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships following Friday's (May 12) opening day of competition at George C. Griffin Track and Field Facility in Atlanta, Ga.  

The Cavaliers top the field with 35 points followed by Duke in second place with 17 points. Wake Forest and Virginia Tech are tied for third with 15 points.   

The meet started with UVA recording the first- and second-best marks in the hammer. Sophomore Hilmar Jonsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) earned the ACC title for the second consecutive year with a mark of 69.02m (226-5). Senior Jordan Young (Windsor, Ont.) was runner-up with an effort of 67.65m (221-11).    

In another big event, UVA recorded three scoring runs in the 10,000 meters. Redshirt sophomore Brent Demarest (Charleston, S.C.) led the team, finishing in third place (29.27.11). Senior Zach Herriott (Kansas City, Mo.) finished fourth with a time of 29.31.08, while freshman Lachlan Cook (Brisbane, Australia) recorded a time of 29.31.89 for fifth.   

In the javelin, junior Anthony Bouselli (Hawley, Pa.) threw a distance of 57.92m (190-0). His season-best effort placed him seventh in the event.   


 

 

Senior Henry Wynne (Westport, Conn.) recorded a time of 3:49.06 in the prelims for the 1,500 meters. He finished first in his heat, earning him a spot in the finals on Sunday at 5:30 p.m.  

"We need to focus on us and not focus on anyone else," head coach Bryan Fetzer said. "We need to just take care of business."

  The ACC Championships will continue tomorrow (May 13) with action beginning at 11 a.m. ACC Network Extra will stream events beginning at 5:30 p.m.
