TALLAHASSEE, Fla.--The Virginia men's track and field team completed the first day of the ACC Outdoor Championships Thursday (May 14) at Mike Long Track.

After the first day, the Cavaliers are in a tie for second with Syracuse at 18 points, behind only Florida State (26 points). Louisville is fourth (14), followed by Virginia Tech (10), NC State (8), Notre Dame (6), North Carolina (6), Miami (5), Wake Forest (3), Pittsburgh (2) and Georgia Tech (1).

"We came in with a goal and that goal is still in sight after today," UVa head coach Bryan Fetzer said. "If you want to be a championship-caliber team, you have to take care of business, which we did today. Plus you have to do the unexpected, which is what Payton (Hazzard) and Devin (Brewer) did by qualifying for finals when they were not seeded to do so. So after day one, I'm thrilled."

Sophomore Jordan Young (Windsor, Ontario) earned All-ACC honors in the hammer throw, placing second with a mark of 67.31m (220-10).

The Cavaliers had two scorers in the 10,000 meters with junior Zach Herriott (Kansas City, Mo.) finishing fourth in 29:54.68 and freshman Chase Weaverling (Darnestown, Md.) placing seventh in 30:08.61.

In the long jump, sophomore Chris Rogers (Midlothian, Va.) placed sixth with a mark of 7.28m (23-10.75), while senior Ryan Satchell (Central Islip, N.Y.) finished just out of the scoring positions in ninth with a leap of 7.14m (23-5.25).

"We had a great competition in the long jump with both men making the finals," UVa assistant coach Mario Wilson said. "Chris (Rogers) came in seeded sixth and finished sixth and I think he turned a corner today because he had six legal jumps that were all solid. Ryan (Satchell) qualified for the finals in his final long jump and came up a couple centimeters short of scoring, but we are looking forward to his triple jump on Saturday."

After the first five events of the decathlon, freshman Jack Lint (Westerville, Ohio) is in fourth place with 3,718 points, while junior Christian Lavorgna (Jefferson, N.J.) and redshirt freshman Cam Collins (Calhoun, Ga.) are eighth (3,513) and ninth (3,500), respectively.

"All three guys put in solid marks in the decathlon about a month ago at the Virginia Challenge and each made goals to improve their scores at this meet," Wilson said. "They missed out on some points in a few events, but they more than made up for them in other events, so we are in good shape for each of them to reach their goals tomorrow."

In the 400-meter hurdles, junior Devin Brewer (Dumfries, Va.) qualified for the final on Saturday, placing eighth in the prelims in 53.30. Senior Payton Hazzard (Huntington, N.Y.) qualified for the 200m final, placing seventh in 21.27.

The Cavaliers had two qualifiers in the 1,500-meter final, with sophomore Mike Marsella (Hope Valley, R.I.) placing second in the prelims in 3:43.86, while sophomore Henry Wynne (Westport, Conn.) was sixth in 3:45.47.

The action continues Friday with field events at 10 a.m. and track events at 5:45 p.m. ESPN3's coverage is set to begin at 7 p.m.
