Cavaliers Finish Eighth at ACC Championships

May 14, 2017

Atlanta, Ga.-
The Virginia women’s track and field team concluded the ACC Championships on Sunday (May 14) at the George C. Griffin Track and Field Facility in Atlanta, Ga.

The Cavaliers placed eighth in the meet with 36.5 points. Virginia Tech won the title with 124.5 points. Florida State finished in second place with 118.5 points, while Miami finished third with 108 points.

In the triple jump, sophomore Kelly McKee (Lenexa, Kan.) finished second with a personal-best mark of 13.17m (43-2.5). The effort ranks her third in UVA history and 19th in the nation.

With a personal-best performance of 50.79m (166-7), senior Christine Bohan (Avon Lake, Ohio) placed sixth in the discus. Her mark ranks her seventh in UVA history. She earned All-ACC honors in the event.

Senior Heather Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) scored for the Cavaliers in the 400m hurdles. She finished seventh recording a time of 59.69.

In the women’s 4x100m relay, senior Tori McKenzie (Chatham, Va.), senior Andrea Wright (Chesapeake, Va.), sophomore Ciara Leonard (Elkins Park, Pa.) and junior Kiana Hairston (Manassas, Va.), respectively, recorded a time of 45.98. The team finished eighth in the event.

“We were not where we wanted to be overall in the team score but they (the women's team) continue to build,” head coach Bryan Fetzer said. “Commendable performance. We will continue to strive to get better. It was a great weekend for Christine (Bohan). She threw better in all three of her events than she did last year and did not place as high which shows how difficult this field was.”

The meet also signified the men’s and women’s outdoor track and field matchups between Virginia and Virginia Tech in the Commonwealth Clash, sponsored by Virginia529, the official college savings plan of University of Virginia Athletics. By virtue of Virginia Tech winning both the men’s and women’s ACC titles, the Hokies won the Clash by tiebreaker after both schools finished with 11 points. Learn more about Virginia529 and this competition at

Next, the Cavaliers will compete in the East Regional Qualifier in Lexington, Ky. May 25-27.
