LEXINGTON, Ky. - The No. 4 Virginia men's track and field team had three athletes advance to the NCAA Championships on the final day of the NCAA East Regional Preliminary Rounds in Lexington, Ky., at the University of Kentucky Track and Field Complex.

Freshman Jordan Scott (Portmore, Jamaica) qualified for the NCAA Championships after finishing third in the triple jump. Scott recorded a distance of 15.96m (52-4.5) to advance in the event.

"Jordan (Scott) competed like the champion that he is today," assistant coach Mario Wilson said. "He delivered when it mattered. He is mature beyond his years"

Two Cavaliers qualified for the championships in the discus. Senior Jordan Young (Windsor, Ont.) finished second with a season-best mark of 61.43m (201-6). Senior Filip Mihaljevic (Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina) recorded a mark of 58.55m (192-1) to take seventh overall.

"Jordan (Young) and Filip (Mihaljevic) once again showed why they are the top throwers in the NCAA," assistant coach Martin Maric said. "Coming in after a long delay and making it easy on the first two throws in the manner they did is worth respect. This sensational duo will make Virginia proud for many years to come."

Each individual event (excluding the heptathlon and decathlon) had 48 competitors, while relays had 24 teams. The top 12 from every event move on to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, to be held in Eugene, Ore., on June 7-10.

Senior Nathan Kiley (Chantilly, Va.), sophomore Charles Bowman (Harrisburg, Pa.), junior Logan Carrington (Leesburg, Va.) and sophomore Jake Dixon (Falmouth, Maine), respectively, recorded a time of 3:08.30 for 17th in the 4x400m relay. The time ranks fifth in school history. Additionally, Kiley's relay split of 1:33.98 was the fourth-best leadoff in school history for the 4x400 meter relay.

In the men's 5,000m, redshirt sophomore Brent Demarest (Charleston, S.C.) led the Cavaliers, finishing with a time of 14:25.21 for 18th place. Freshman Lachlan Cook (Brisbane, Australia) placed 23rd overall with a time of 14:33.90, while redshirt junior Thomas Madden (Front Royal, Va.) finished 30th with a time of 14:42.58.

The Cavaliers will compete in the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Org., on June 7-10.
