EUGENE, Ore.—Virginia track and field junior Cleo Boyd finished ninth in the 10,000 meters Thursday (June 9) at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore.

Boyd (Kingston, Ontario), seeded 15th, placed ninth in the 10,000m in a time of 33:11.22, which ranks third on UVA’s all-time list. Boyd’s previous best time in the event was 34:25.69, which was set at the NCAA East Preliminary two weeks ago in Jacksonville, Fla. That race was her second 10,000m race ever, with her first being an ACC Championship-winning performance in May. Boyd also captured the 5,000m conference title.

“I am pretty happy (about going over a minute faster than her previous PR), but I wanted a little more out of myself,” Boyd said. “I knew it was going to have to be a special day to crack 33 minutes, but when I look at my season as a whole, I’m really happy.”

“Cleo has had a fantastic track season and ran well tonight,” UVA distance coach Todd Morgan said. “A personal best in a championship meet is what you work to achieve. She will learn from this and build on it next year.”

The Cavaliers will conclude action at the NCAA Championships Friday (June 10). Juniors Filip Mihaljevic (Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Jordan Young (Windsor, Ontario) will compete in the discus at 8:05 p.m., while junior Henry Wynne (Westport, Conn.) will run in the final of the 1,500 meters at 8:42 p.m. All times are Eastern.
