Louisville, Ky.-
The Virginia men’s cross country team finished fourth overall at the ACC Championships on Friday (Oct. 27) in Louisville, Ky., at the E.P. Tom Sawyer Park. Senior Brent Demarest (Charleston, S.C.) paced the team with a second-place finish, recording the team’s best individual finish since Emil Heineking won the ACC Championships in 2010.

No. 4 Syracuse finished first for the fifth-consecutive year with 27 points. No. 11 Virginia Tech placed second (73 points) and No. 22 NC State finished third (98 points). The Cavaliers recorded 100 points for fourth place.

Three Cavaliers earned All-ACC honors as Demarest led the team with a time of 23:15.6. Sophomore Lachlan Cook (Brisbane, Australia) captured a fifth-place finish with a time of 23:24.3, while senior Chase Weaverling (Darnestown, Md.) finished 19th with a time of 24:00.5.

Redshirt sophomore Alex Corbett (Burke, Va.) was the next to cross the finish line, recording a time of 24:18.3 for 36th place. Redshirt sophomore Ari Klau (West Hartford, Conn.) rounded out the scoring runs, placing 38th with a time of 24:19.1.

“Very positive step after Wisconsin,” head coach Pete Watson said. “Obviously being fourth is not where we want to be, but we ran hard and we were aggressive. We tried to win but came up short. It was a phenomenal race by Brent and Lachlan. I'm proud of the effort today.”

Today’s meet was sponsored by Virginia529, the official college savings plan of the University of Virginia Athletics. With Virginia Tech finishing ahead of Virginia, the Hokies have earned two points, one for each race, in the Virginia529 Commonwealth Clash. The score for the Clash is now Virginia Tech – 2.5 and University of Virginia– 1.  Learn more about Virginia529 and this competition at TheCommmonewalthClash.com

Next, the Cavaliers will host the Southeast Regional meet on Nov. 10 at Panorama Farms in Earlysville, Va.
