Schmiede Earns Individual NCAA Championships Berth

Earlysville, Va.-- The Virginia women's cross country team finished seventh at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships with 202 points on Friday (Nov. 10) at Panorama Farms in Earlysville, Va.

Senior Frances Schmiede (Sydney, Australia) earned an individual NCAA Championships berth after recording the fourth-fastest time from an individual, not on an advancing team, at the regional site. She finished seventh overall with a time of 20:26.2, earning USTFCCCA Southeast Region honors. 

No. 5 NC State and No. 12 Furman finished first and second, respectively, automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championships on Nov. 18 in Louisville, Ky. The Wolfpack recorded 68 points, while the Paladins recorded 83 points.

Graduate student Beth Hawling (Cheltenham, Great Britain) finished 14th with a time of 20:43.9, earning USTFCCCA All-Southeast Region honors. 

Sophomore Emma Call (Richmond, Va.) finished 36th with a time of 21:29.9, while freshman Hannah Moran (Salem, Va.) finished 60th with a time of 21:59.1. Junior Emily Mulhern (15:40.0) rounded out the scoring runs, finishing 85th with a time of 22:20.6. 


 

 

"Great runs today by Frances (Schmiede) and Beth (Hawling)," head women's cross country coach Todd Morgan said. "They have made some tremendous progress this season."

Schmiede will compete at the NCAA Championships on Nov. 18 at the E.P. Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville Ky.
