LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Virginia women's track and field team opened competition Friday at the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet on the campus of the University of Kentucky. The meet features one of the strongest fields of any meet in the nation as seven of the top 10 teams are in action.

"It was a very productive day," said head coach Bryan Fetzer. "The field eventers are continuing to improve and had some more PRs today. That is the key for our team, to continue to get better each day. I challenged them to accept the challenge that this meet would bring and they certainly did so on day one."

Friday's action featured another strong performance in the women's pole vault. Sarah DeVita (Ridgewood, N.J.) and Katie Freix (Chantilly, Va.) both had PRs, clearing 11' 9" for the sixth-best mark in school history. For Freix, the 11' 9" performance ranks second in school history by a freshman.

Christine Bohan (Avon Lake, Ohio) also had a strong performance Friday, as she entered the Virginia all-time top 10 in the weight throw with a PR of 51' 5".

The day concluded with the distance medley relay of Sara Sargent (Philadelphia, Pa.), Chimere Ezumah (Gardena, Calif.), Vanessa Fabrizio (Denver, Colo.) and Kathleen Stevens (Blacksburg, Va.) finishing ninth in a time of 11:32.67 as the top 10 fastest times in the nation this year were run at the McCravy Meet.

Virginia will conclude competition at the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet on Saturday. Heptathlon action begins at 10 a.m., with field events starting at 11 a.m. and track events beginning at noon. There will be live coverage of the meet on SEC Network Plus on Saturday from noon until 4:30 p.m. Cable and satellite subscribers of the SEC Network can log-on to watch SEC Network Plus events on and the WatchESPN app.
