Nathan Kiley

Feb. 20, 2016

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.--The Virginia men's track and field team's distance medley relay captured the win Saturday (Feb. 20) at the UCS Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The foursome of freshman Matthew Novak (Glen Allen, Va.), junior Nathan Kiley (Chantilly, Va.), sophomore Kenneth Hagen (Blacksburg, Va.) and junior Henry Wynne (Westport, Conn.) finished first with a time of 9:35.60. When the time is converted from a flat-track for NCAA seeding purposes, Virginia's time of 9:27.7 ranks seventh in the country. The top 12 teams in the country will qualify for the NCAA Championships.

"That was a huge run on the flat track to qualify for the NCAA Championships," UVA distance coach Pete Watson said. "It was a total team effort out there today. We knew exactly how fast we had to run today to make the NCAA meet then we went out and did it. Novak being a freshman led off and handled the pressure, while Hagen, getting his first chance to be part of a big UVA relay, did a nice job on the 800. The older guys, Nathan and Henry, were outstanding. Nathan ran us back into the race, and Henry closed it out. We are very excited about the result."

Sophomore Bridget Guy (Greensburg, Pa.) won the women's pole vault with a height of 4.10m (13' 5.25").

The Cavaliers return to action next weekend for the ACC Indoor Championships Feb. 25-27 in Boston.
