CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Virginia track and field team will send a few competitors to either the Virginia Tech Last Chance meet or the Alex Wilson Invitational this weekend in attempt to qualify or better their provisional qualifying mark - for the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 13-14, in College Station, Texas. Events at Notre Dame will kick off on Friday and conclude Saturday, while Virginia Tech’s event will take place on Saturday only. Live results can be found on VirginiaSports.com.

Eight Cavaliers have provisionally qualified into six events at the NCAA Championships already this season. Led by junior Ayla Smith who has hit the provisional mark in both the 60m hurdles and the pentathlon, senior Yemi Ayeni (shot put) and freshmen Matt Meyer (long jump) and Morgane Gay (800m), in addition to the men’s distance medley relay, have also met the provisional mark in their respective events.

Smith, a native of Winchester, Va., had an impressive performance at last weekends ACC Championships, finishing fourth in the pentathlon with the nation’s 27th-best point total of 3879. She also bettered her 60m hurdles school record time with an 8.39 performance, ranking her 34th nationally.

Ayeni, from Kendall Park, N.J., currently holds the nation’s 10th-longest throw in the shot put with his heave of 61’ 8.75” from the Virginia Tech Challenge. The mark broke his previous school record and earned him ACC Performer of the Week honors following the competition.

Meyer, a native of Suhlendorf, Germany, broke the program’s previous long jump record of 24’ 7.25” held by Marion Mason and Tiki Barber with a leap of 24’ 8.75” at the Virginia Tech Invitational. His jump is currently ranked 24th nationally.

Gay is from Bethesda, Md., and in her first collegiate 800m race at the Penn State National Invitational she shattered Kim Kelly’s 800m record of 2:09.27 from 1985 with her 2:08.07 performance. Gay currently holds the nation’s 33rd fastest 800m time.

The DMR team of freshman Kevin Anding (Houstin, Texas), redshirt freshman Emil Heineking (Chardon, Ohio), freshman Lance Roller (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) and senior Kevin Tschirhart (Northport, N.Y.) finished second at the PSU National Invite in a season-best time of 9:45.55. The quartet currently sits 18th on the national charts.
