CHARLOTTESVILLE - The Virginia men's track & field team opened the outdoor season Saturday by winning seven events at the Virginia Cup at Lannigan Field. The Cavaliers split a pair of dual meet results at the meet, downing Norfolk State 102-34, but falling to Liberty 84-65.
"The performances overall were competitive with a lot of learning involved," said head coach Bryan Fetzer. "The first meet of the outdoor season is a time for teaching and getting familiar with new events that are not contested indoors. There is a transition shifting from indoors to outdoors. We handled it well and its sets us up for continued success in the season."
The Cavaliers went 1-2 in the discus, with Filip Mihaljevic (Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina) winning with a mark of 195-0 and Jordan Young (Windsor, Ontario), making his outdoor debut at UVa, finishing second with a mark of 188-5, moving him into fourth on Virginia's all-time list. Young also won the shot put title with a mark of 61-2, moving him into third on the UVa all-time list.
Virginia had the top two finishers in the 1500m with Ed Schrom (Harrisburg, Pa.) winning in 3:57.08, edging teammate Evan Chiplock (Saginaw, Mich.) by 0.03 seconds. The Cavaliers also went 1-2 in the 3000m. Connor Rog (Fairfield, Conn.) won in 9:02.35, finishing just ahead of Adam Visokay (Ruckersville, Va.), who was second in 9:02.49.
Devin Brewer (Dumfries, Va.) was victorious in the 110-meter hurdles, crossing in a time of 14.88. Scott Clarke (Devonshire, Bermuda) won the men's 100m in a wind-aided 10.95, which eclipsed his PR.
Graduate student Kyle Smith (Leola, Pa.) made his Cavalier debut, finishing third in the javelin with a mark of 208-1, placing him sixth on Virginia's all-time list. Anthony Bouselli (Hawley, Pa.) was fourth at 182-8, the fourth-best freshman mark in school history
Aaron Worrell (Fort Eustis, Va.) was second in the long jump with a mark of 23-9, missing the Cavalier all-time top ten list by less than an inch.
Virginia will return to action next week with athletes competing at the Fred Hardy Invitational, which runs March 27-28 in Richmond, Va.
