Smith Breaks Program's All-Time 100m Hurdle Record

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Junior Ayla Smith broke her second school record of the year on Saturday at the Lou Onesty/Milton Abramson Invitational, winning the 100m hurdles in 13.65. Smith bettered current teammate Lauren Echko's time of 13.72 from last year and currently holds the program’s all-time 60m hurdles indoor record, also running 8.39 this past winter.

A pair of Cavalier All-Americans won the discus competitions, with senior Yemi Ayeni winning the men’s side with a season-best throw of 197’ 2”. Senior Billie-Jo Grant led the women with a season-best toss of 167’ 8”, while Caitlin Kelly finished runner-up with a mark of 159’ 2”.

Ayeni also finished third in the shot put, throwing 58’ 6.5”, while junior Eric Pickle threw a season-best 51’ 8.25” in the event.

Virginia’s 4x100m relay team of sophomore Malcolm Carradine, senior Rainer Fiala, senior Brian Lee and freshman Kevin Anding won the race in 41.58 and sophomore Robbie Eckardt concluded the meet for the Cavaliers winning the 3000m in a personal-best time of 8:34.64.

In other events, sophomore All-American Meikle Paschal finished runner-up in the 200m, crossing the line in a personal-best time of 21.81, while All-American Brian Lee finished fourth in a season-best time of 22.02.

Senior Kevin Tschirhart ran a personal-best in the 800m, crossing the line in third in 1:51.29, while the Cavaliers placed two in the top-three of the 3000m - led by freshman Anna Corrigan’s second-place finish in 10:13.88. Classmate Laurel MacMillan followed her across the line, clocking in with a season-best time of 10:21.51.

Junior Katie Darraugh tied a personal-best in the pole vault, clearing 11’ 11.75” to finish second and sophomore Katie Trizna won the high jump, clearing 5’ 1”.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Thursday at the University of Miami, competing in the 2009 Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Events will begin on Thursday and conclude Saturday evening.
