CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-Virginia track and field senior Catherine White (Roanoke, Va.) won the gold medal in the women's 10,000 meters to cap the first day of action at the 2012 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday (April 19). The Cavaliers earned five medals in the five completed events.
After one day, Virginia's women lead with 19 points, followed by Duke (16), NC State (15), Virginia Tech (10), Maryland (9), Miami (4), Florida State (4) and Clemson (1).
On the men's side, Virginia is tied for second with Florida State with 24 points, four points behind leader Virginia Tech (28). Duke is fourth with 14 points, followed by NC State (13), Wake Forest (11), North Carolina (2) and Maryland (1).
White won the women's 10,000 meters in a time of 33:51.23, the fifth-fastest time in school history. White stayed between third and fifth place for most of the race, before making a jump to the lead with about 400 meters to go.
"Catherine ran really well tonight and has overcome so much adversity over the past couple of years, so tonight is just a culmination of her dedication and focus," women's distance coach Todd Morgan said. "It's great way to start off the meet for the team. We're happy to have the conference meet here in Charlottesville, and ending day one with an ACC Champion is great way to start."
Senior Andy Fahringer (Whitehall, Pa.) finished second in the men's javelin with a school-record mark of 74.56m (244' 7"). He reached a PR of 73.82m in his third attempt and saved his best throw for last. His mark surpassed the previous ACC Championship and Lannigan Field records. The mark of 74.56m places him seventh in the nation, based on distances going into the meet.
Junior Sean Keveren (Brentwood, Tenn.) earned silver in the men's 10,000 meters in a time of 29:31.86, the fifth-fastest time in school history. Keveren was in the lead pack for the entire race and took over Florida State's Michael Fout in the final 600 meters for second. Sophomore Thomas Porter (Fredericksburg, Va.) placed seventh in atime of 30:06.72.
In the women's hammer throw, senior Maureen Laffan (Toms River, N.J.) earned silver with a mark of 59.11m (193' 11") on her fourth attempt. After fouling her first attempt, Laffan threw five attempts beyond third-place Jessica Echard's mark of 55.96m (183' 7").
Fellow senior Erin Wykoff (St. Jacob, Ill.) placed eighth with a mark of 52.83m (173' 4"), only two feet shy of her PR. Sophomore Logan Clements reached a new PR with a distance of 46.10m (151' 3"), the ninth-best mark in Virginia history.
In the men's hammer throw, senior Vincenzo Chiariello (Staten Island, N.Y.) hit a mark of 61.84m (202' 11") to place third for his first ACC medal. His mark, which was eight inches shy of a PR and the school record, came in his third attempt.
The action continues Saturday at 12 p.m., with the decathlon and the heptathlon at 1 p.m. The prelims of the running events begin at 4 p.m.
