PHILADELPHIA - The Virginia men's track and field team opened competition Thursday at the Penn Relays at Franklin Field. The Cavaliers had athletes compete in two events during the first day of the prestigious meet.

"It was more like cross country conditions than outdoor track conditions today," said head coach Bryan Fetzer. "It was some of the worst conditions to compete that I've been apart of in a long time, with it being very windy and temperatures in low 40s and upper 30s. In addition, with the schedule being way behind made it tough to get anything accomplished from an NCAA standpoint."

Adam Visokay (Ruckersville, Va.) finished eighth in the college men's 3000m steeplechase, setting a PR with a time of 9:06.73.

In the college men's 5000m championship, the Cavaliers had a pair of runners post PRs. Zach Herriott (Kansas City, Mo.) ran 14:17.03 to finish 13th in the race. He edged teammate Connor Rog (Fairfield, Conn.), who was 14 in a time of 14:17.54.

The Cavaliers will have athletes in action at the Penn Relays on Friday and Saturday before returning home to host the Virginia Grand Prix on May 8.
