CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 7 men and the Cavalier women’s track and field teams will compete in the ACC Championships in Atlanta, Ga., beginning on Friday (May 12). The three-day championship is hosted by Georgia Tech at the George C. Griffin Track and Field Facility.
Live stats and live video will be available through links at VirginiaSports.com. ACC Network Extra will stream the evening competitions with broadcasts starting on Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 5:30 p.m. and on Sunday at 5 p.m.
The men’s team holds the top ACC ranking in the USTFCCCA (11th), FloTrack (7th) and Dyestat (7th) polls. Virginia Tech ranks 13th in the FloTrack poll and 10th in the Dyestat poll. On the women’s side, Florida State leads the conference with their highest standing coming from FloTrack (11th). Miami and Notre Dame are also ranked in the top 20 according to the most recent rankings from USTFCCCA and FloTrack.
Three Cavaliers come into the meet ranking atop the ACC in an event. Senior Filip Mihaljevic (Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina) stands as the conference’s current leader in the shot put with a mark of 20.52m (67-4). Sophomore Hilmar Jonsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) leads the hammer with a season-best effort of 70.31m (230-8), while freshman Jordan Scott (Portmore, Jamaica) paces the triple jump with a performance of 16.44m (53-11.25).
Six additional performances currently hold the second-best mark in the league including Mihaljevic in the discus, senior Henry Wynne (Westport, Conn.) in the 1,500m and the 5,000m, redshirt sophomore Oghenakpobo Efekoro (Brooklyn, N.Y) in the shot put, junior Caitlin Mautz (Doylestown, Pa.) in the javelin and redshirt sophomore Jack Lint (Westerville, Ohio) in the decathlon.
The Cavalier men finished third at last year’s championships, while the women’s team finished fourth. Mihaljevic was the 2016 ACC champion in both the shot put and the discus, securing him the title of 2016 ACC Outdoor Championships Men’s Field Most Valuable Performer. He has won the last five ACC shot put titles (indoor and outdoor) and three-consecutive ACC discus titles. The Cavaliers also return defending champions Jonsson in the hammer, Wynne in the 1,500m and senior Cleo Boyd (Kingston, Ont.) in the 5,000m and 10,000m events.
The meet will also signify the men’s and women’s outdoor track and field matchups between Virginia and Virginia Tech in the Commonwealth Clash, sponsored by Virginia529, the official college savings plan of University of Virginia Athletics. There are two points at stake in the Virginia529 Commonwealth Clash, the point rivalry series between UVA and Virginia Tech. The school that finishes higher in the meet on the men’s side will receive a point in the competition, as will the school that finishes higher on the women’s side. Virginia leads the 2016-17 Commonwealth Clash, 11-9. Learn more about Virginia529 and this competition at thecommonwealthclash.com.
