CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The No. 5 Virginia men’s track and field team and Cavalier women head to Tallahassee, Fla., for the ACC Outdoor Championships Friday-Sunday (May 13-15) at Florida State’s Mike Long Track.
Live results will be available at VirginiaSports.com. ESPN3 will have a live broadcast from 6-9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 6-9 p.m. Sunday.
The Virginia men are ranked fifth in the latest FloTrack national poll and No. 11 in the most recent USTFCCCA national rankings. The Cavaliers are the only ACC school ranked in the FloTrack top 10. Other ACC men’s teams ranked in the USTFCCCA top 25 include Virginia Tech (No. 10) and Syracuse (No. 12). Miami is tabbed No. 17 in the USTFCCCA women’s rankings.
Several Cavaliers come into the meet ranked in the top 25 in the NCAA, including junior Henry Wynne (Westport, Conn.), who is No. 2 in the men’s 1,500 meters and 22nd in the 5,000 meters. Fellow junior Filip Mihaljevic (Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina) is fourth in the men’s discus and fifth in the shot put, while redshirt freshman Oghenakpobo Efekoro (Brooklyn, N.Y.) is 12th in the shot put. Freshman Hilmar Jonsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) is currently sixth in the men’s hammer throw.
At last year’s ACC outdoor meet, the Cavalier men finished second, while the women placed ninth. Mihaljevic captured men’s shot put and discus individual titles, while graduate student Iona Lake (Norwich, England) won the women’s 3,000m steeplechase. Junior Jordan Young (Windsor, Ontario) was named the ACC Outdoor Championship’s Men’s Field Most Valuable Performer.
The meet will also signify the men’s and women’s outdoor track and field matchups between Virginia and Virginia Tech in the Commonwealth Clash, sponsored by Virginia529, the official college savings plan of University of Virginia Athletics. There are two points at stake in the Virginia529 Commonwealth Clash, the point rivalry series between UVA and Virginia Tech. The school that finishes higher in the meet on the men’s side will receive a point in the competition, as will the school that finishes higher on the women’s side. Virginia has clinched the 2015-16 Commonwealth Clash, leading 12-6. Learn more about Virginia529 and this competition at thecommonwealthclash.com.
