BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
Junior Andy Fahringer qualified for the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday by finishing fifth in the qualifying round of the javelin at the NCAA East Preliminary Round. Virginia also advanced seven Cavaliers to this weekend's quarterfinal rounds of their respective events at Indiana University's Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex.
Fahringer, ranked seventh heading into the competition, threw 232' 6" on his third throw to earn the fifth-best mark of the day. With his finish, he will advance to his second-straight NCAA Championship. This year's national meet will take place in Des Moines, Iowa on June 8-11.
In today's first round action, senior Ayla Smith (400mH), junior Morgane Gay (1500m), sophomore Brett Johnson (1500m), senior John Minen (1500m), senior Lyndsay Harper (800m), sophomore Robby Andrews (800m) and freshman Anthony Kostelac (800m) all advanced to their respective 24-person quarterfinal rounds of the NCAA East Preliminary Round. The top-12 finishers in the quarterfinal round will advance to the NCAA Championships.
Smith opened track events with an 11th-place finish in the 400m hurdles in a time of 58.78. She will compete in tomorrow's quarterfinals at 7 p.m.
In the 1500m, Gay finished the women's race with a time of 4:22.51. On the men's side, Johnson completed the race in 3:50.86 and Minen earned a time of 3:49.44. The women's quarterfinal round will take place Saturday at 6:30 p.m., with the men's race following at 6:45 p.m.
In the 800m, senior Lyndsay Harper finished in 2:08.04. Sophomore Robby Andrews led the men's competitors with the top time of 1:49.11 and freshman Anthony Kostelac earned a time of 1:50.45. The women's quarterfinal round is set for tomorrow at 6:30 p.m., while the men will toe the line at 6:45 p.m.
In other events, junior Anna Corrigan, making her first regional appearance, narrowly missed advancing with the top-12 finishers to the NCAA Championships in the 10,000m. Corrigan finished 15th in a personal-best time of 33:58.46. That mark ranks eighth all-time at UVa.
Virginia will return to action tomorrow at the NCAA East Preliminary Round. Events are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
