May 29, 2018

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-  Senior pole vaulter Katie Freix (Chantilly, Va.) was named a 2018 CoSIDA Academic All-District Track and Field/Cross Country District 3 selection, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America on Tuesday (May 29).

Freix concluded her season at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds, clearing a height of 3.93m (12’10.75”) to finish 28th. She qualified for the regional meet after posting a career-best height of 4.01m (13’1.75”) at the Virginia Challenge (April 20). She was the third female in UVA history and second in outdoor competition to clear 13 feet in the event.

Graduating with a 3.92 GPA, Freix earned a degree in mechanical engineering. She captured Virginia’s Jettie Hill Memorial Award, presented to the athletics department’s senior female student-athlete with the highest GPA.

With the first-team All-District selection, Freix is now eligible for Academic All-America honors. To be nominated, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 GPA on a 4.0 scale, in addition to completing one full calendar year with the nominating institution. Academic All-America selections will be announced June 21.
