JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Virginia women's track and field team concluded competition at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds on Saturday at Hodges Stadium on the campus of the University of North Florida. The Cavalier 4x100m relay team broke the school record in the only event of the day for the women, but it wasn't good enough to advance to the NCAA Championships.

The top 12 competitors in each event at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds will advance to the NCAA Championships, held June 10-13 at the University of Oregon.

The quartet of Peyton Chaney (Belleville, Ill.), Andrea Wright (Chesapeake, Va.), Jordan Lavender (Nashville, Tenn.) and Tori McKenzie (Chatham, Va.) ran 44.56 to break the school record of 44.75 they had set earlier this season. Their time placed them 16th in the event, missing the top 12 by 0.15 seconds.

"It is bittersweet when you run the fastest time ever in a Virginia uniform, but it isn't good enough to advance," said head coach Bryan Fetzer. "That is one of the fastest times ever to not qualify, so you feel for them because they worked so hard this season. Last year, we came here and didn't get the stick around. This year, we ran a great race and had a time that gets you in the meet in most years."

Virginia will have two athletes compete at the NCAA Championships in two weeks. Christine Bohan (Avon Lake, Ohio) advanced in the shot put on Thursday and Lavender qualified for the 400m on Friday. Both will be making their first appearance at the outdoor championship meet.

"I can't say enough about what our women have done this season," said Fetzer. "It is a young group and they are a year away from doing some great things. Jordan and Christine have a chance to go out to Eugene and close out the year on a high note."
