Mihaljevic and Maric Receive USTFCCCA Southeast Region Honors

Filip Mihaljevic

June 8, 2015

CHARLOTTESVILLE - Two members of the Virginia men's track and field program were honored Monday as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its 2015 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field regional awards. Sophomore Filip Mihaljevic (Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina) was named Southeast Region Field Athlete of the Year and Martin Maric was named Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year.

Mihaljevic was a two-time ACC Champion this season, taking the title in both the shot put and discus. He qualified for the NCAA Championships in those events and looks to earn first-team All-America honors in both events for the second consecutive year when he competes later this week. Mihaljevic set the school record in the shot put of 20.16m at the Virginia Challenge in April and set the school record in the discus of 63.11m a week later at the Penn Relays.

Maric, in his third season as the Cavaliers' throws coach, guided Mihaljevic and sophomore Jordan Young (Windsor, Ontario) to five NCAA Championship entries, as Young is the only male competing in three individual events in Eugene. Mihaljevic and Young rank first and second in school history in both the shot put and discus, while Young set the school record in the hammer throw with a mark of 70.73m to win the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds. Combined with Christine Bohan (Avon Lake, Ohio), who qualified for the NCAA Championships in the women's shot put, Maric's group was 6-for-6 in qualifying out of the east region. Last month, the Virginia men finished second at the ACC Championships, with Maric's throwers recording 42 of the Cavaliers' 100 points.

The Cavaliers will have seven men and two women competing this week at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. The meet will run Wednesday through Saturday at historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.
