CHARLOTTESVILLE - Nine members of the Virginia men's and women's track and field teams will compete this week at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by the University of Oregon. The meet will run June 10-13 at Hayward Field in Eugene, with coverage on the ESPN family of networks as well as live results available on FlashResults.com.
The eighth-ranked Cavalier men will have seven athletes competing in the meet, tying the school record set in 2010. Virginia's 10 entries is a school record and ties the Cavaliers for sixth-most in the nation at this year's meet.
Sophomore Jordan Young (Windsor, Ontario) is the first Virginia athlete to qualify for the NCAA Championships in three events, as he will compete in the hammer throw, shot put and discus. He is the only male athlete to qualify for three individual events at this year's meet. Young will be joined in the shot put and discus by sophomore Filip Mihaljevic (Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina), who earned first-team All-America honors in both events last year.
Senior Ryan Satchell (Central Islip, N.Y.) will compete in the triple jump for the second consecutive year after finishing seventh in the event a year ago. Junior Kyle King (Yorktown, Va.) advanced to Oregon in the 3000m steeplechase for the second time, as he finished 12th last year. Senior Kyle Smith (Leola, Pa.) makes his second consecutive appearance in the javelin, having finished 17th a year ago while at Central Michigan. Senior Payton Hazzard (Huntington, N.Y.) and sophomore Henry Wynne (Westport, Conn.) will make their NCAA Outdoor Championship debuts, running in the 400m and 1500m, respectively.
The Cavalier women have two athletes competing in Eugene, both making their debut at the meet. Senior Jordan Lavender (Nashville, Tenn.) will run in the 400m and sophomore Christine Bohan (Avon Lake, Ohio) will compete in the shot put.
The men's championship begins Wednesday, with online coverage on ESPN3 beginning at 2 p.m. ET and television coverage on ESPNU beginning at 7 p.m. ET. Young will compete in the hammer throw at 4:30 p.m. ET, and will join Mihaljevic in the shot put, starting at 8:30 p.m. Smith will compete in the javelin at 8 p.m. ET. The opening day also features the semifinals of the track events, with Wynne in the 1500m at 7:14 p.m. ET, King in the steeplechase at 7:38 p.m. ET and Hazzard in the 400m at 8:30 p.m. ET.
Thursday is the opening day of the women's championship, with ESPN3 coverage starting at 1 p.m. ET, and television coverage in the evening on ESPNU (7 p.m. ET) and ESPN (8:30 p.m. ET). Lavender will run the semifinals of the 400m at 8:30 p.m. ET and Bohan will compete in the shot put at 8:40 p.m. ET.
The men's championship will conclude on Friday, with online coverage beginning at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN3 before ESPN television coverage starts at 7:30 p.m. ET. Young and Mihlajevic will compete in the discus at 7:05 p.m, followed by Satchell in the triple jump ay 7:30 p.m. If the Cavalier runners advance from Wednesday's semifinals, they would compete in the finals on Friday night. The 1500m final is 7:45 p.m. ET, the steeplechase final is 7:57 p.m. ET and the 400m final is 8:35 p.m. ET.
Virginia only has one potential competitor on Saturday as the women's championship concludes. If Lavender advances to the final of the 400m, she would compete at 6:30 p.m. ET and the race would air live during the coverage on ESPN2.
The Cavalier men are looking for their best finish at the meet as they strive to eclipse the 2010 season when they finished tied for 23rd. The women's best finish came in 1983 when they finished tied for 10th.
