Filip Mihaljevic

June 20, 2014

CHARLOTTESVILLE - Virginia first-year Filip Mihaljevic (Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina) was named the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Men's Freshman of the Year on Friday as conference officials announced this year's award winners for men's and women's track and field.

Mihaljevic became the first Virginia male athlete to compete in two individual events at the same NCAA Outdoor Championship, qualifying in the shot put and discus. He earned top-eight finishes to earn first-team All-America honors in both events. He set a school record of 64-2.25 to earn a seventh place finish in the shot put. In the discus, he finished eighth with a throw of 193-1.

At the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in April, Mihaljevic was the conference champion in the discus and finished third in the shot put. He finished his rookie season with the school record in the shot put and the second-best mark in school history in the discus.

Mihaljevic becomes the third Cavalier to be named ACC Outdoor Track and Field Men's Freshman of the Year, joining Robby Andrews in 2010 and Anthony Kostelac in 2011.

Earlier this week, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) officially announced the 2014 All-Americans, based on finishes at last week's NCAA Championships. Joining Mihaljevic with first team honors were men's triple jumper Ryan Satchell (Central Islip, N.Y.) and women's triple jumper Dallas Rose (Pearland, Texas). Men's distance runners Thomas Porter (Fredericksburg, Va.) and Kyle King (Yorktown, Va.) earned second-team honors in the 10000m and 3000m steeplechase, respectively. Adam Visokay (Ruckersville, Va.) and Jen Flack (Alexandria, Va.) earned honorable mention All-America honors in the men's and women's 10000m, respectively.
