BEIJING, China—Former Virginia runner Stephanie Garcia (Class of 2011) placed ninth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase Wednesday (Aug. 26) at the IAAF World Championships.

Garcia, representing the United States, qualified for the finals in the event and placed ninth in the final with a time of 9:31.06. Hyvin Kiyeng Jepkemoi of Kenya won an extremely close race where 0.90 separated first from fourth.

This was Garcia’s second World Championship appearance. At the 2011 world meet in Daegu, South Korea, Garcia finished seventh in her heat and did not qualify for the finals. She earned the spot on Team USA by way of a second-place finish at the USATF Championships in June.
