MADISON, Wis.--The No. 17 Virginia women's cross country team finished third, placing ahead of 11 nationally-ranked teams, Friday (Oct. 16) at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.

The Cavaliers finished with 217 points, behind only No. 1 New Mexico (32 points) and No. 11 Arkansas (188), but finished ahead of top-10 squads from No. 3 Providence, No. 6 Boise State, No. 8 Iowa State and No. 10 Washington.

"I am really happy with how the group was focused from the first step today," UVA head women's cross country coach Todd Morgan said. "It was our first experience of the year in a big and talented field and we stayed composed throughout. We had some big runs from a few folks and a few that showed up solid on an off day. That is what good teams do and I think we made a step towards being that today."

Virginia was led across the line by junior Cleo Boyd (Kingston, Ontario), who placed 20th in 20:09.0, and graduate student Iona Lake (Norwich, England), who finished 22nd in 20:10.3. Sophomore Megan Rebholz (Stafford, Va.) was 28th in 20:17.4, while graduate student Sarah Astin (Isle of Man, Great Britain) and freshman Emily Mulhern (Ijamsville, Md.) rounded out the scoring five in 72nd and 75th.

"I am very pleased with both genders," UVA director of track and field/cross country Bryan Fetzer said. "We competed well today against an incredible field. The best part is we didn't fire on all cylinders and still produced at that level. We are really excited going into ACC's in two weeks."

The Cavaliers return to action Oct. 30 for the ACC Championships in Tallahassee, Fla.
