Charlottesville, Va.- The Virginia men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete at the ACC Cross Country Championships on Friday (Oct. 27) in Louisville, Ky., at the E.P. Tom Sawyer Park. The men’s 8,000-meter race will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the women’s 6,000-meter race at 11 a.m.
The men’s and women’s competitions will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra. Links to the stream and live results can be found at VirginiaSports.com.
The men’s competition will feature No. 4 Syracuse, who has won the past four ACC titles, as well as No. 11 Virginia Tech and No. 22 NC State. On the women’s side, No. 5 NC State enters as the lone nationally ranked program. The Wolfpack won the 2016 ACC Championships.
At last year’s conference meet, the Cavalier men finished second, while the women’s team placed 10th. Senior Brent Demarest (Charleston, S.C.) led UVA with a seventh-place finish, earning All-ACC honors. Additionally, sophomore Lachlan Cook (Brisbane, Australia) was named the ACC Freshman of the Year after recording the top finish (11th) by a true freshman at the event. Junior Emily Mulhern (Ijamsville, Md.) paced the women’s team, earning All-ACC honors after finishing 21st overall.
The Cavaliers enter Friday’s competition after competing at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Oct. 13. Senior Frances Schmiede (Sydney, Australia) led the women’s team to a 21st-place finish. Schmiede finished 28th overall with a time of 20:20.8. Demarest led the men’s team, finishing 56th (24:23.5). The Virginia men placed 30th at the meet.
The meet will also signify the men’s and women’s cross country matchups between Virginia and Virginia Tech in the Commonwealth Clash. Two potential points are at stake in the Virginia529 Commonwealth Clash, the point rivalry series between University of Virginia and Virginia Tech, one for each race.
