CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete at the ACC Championships Friday morning (Oct. 28) at the WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
The women’s 6K race is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start, while the men’s 8K contest is set to begin at 10:45 a.m.
Live results will be available at VirginiaSports.com. Both races will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra online.
The Virginia men are ranked No. 12 in the latest Saucony/FloTrack Top 50 national poll and No. 16 in the most recent U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association national rankings.
The UVA men finished third in their last outing at the Penn State Open on Oct. 14. Redshirt sophomore Brent Demarest (Charleston, S.C.) led UVA across the line in sixth place overall, finishing the 5.2-mile course in 25:07. Freshman Lachlan Cook (Brisbane, Australia) was seventh in 25:10, while senior Zach Herriott (Kansas City, Mo.) placed ninth 25:12. UVA is one of three ranked teams in the USTFCCCA poll, along with defending ACC and NCAA champion Syracuse (No. 6) and Virginia Tech (No. 26).
Virginia’s women placed 18th at the Pre-National Invitational Oct. 15 in Terre Haute, Ind. Sophomore Emily Mulhern (Ijamsville, Md.) led the Cavaliers across the line in 69th overall in a 6K time of 21:09.6, while junior Megan Rebholz (Stafford, Va.) was 97th in 21:23.9. NC State (No. 3) and Notre Dame (No. 19) are the two ACC schools ranked in the USTFCCCA national rankings.
The Cavalier women won the 2015 ACC crown in dramatic fashion, placing all five runners in the top 22 en route to capturing their first ACC title since 1982. Virginia’s men placed third at last year’s conference meet.
The meet will also signify the men’s and women’s cross country matchups between Virginia and Virginia Tech in the Commonwealth Clash, sponsored by Virginia529, the official college savings plan of University of Virginia Athletics. Two potential points are at stake in the Virginia529 Commonwealth Clash, the point rivalry series between University of Virginia and Virginia Tech, one for each race. The score for the Clash is currently, University of Virginia – 1.5 and Virginia Tech – 1. Learn more about Virginia529 and this competition at TheCommonwealthClash.com.
Up next, the Cavaliers will host the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships Nov. 11 at Panorama Farms in Earlysville.
