CHARLOTTESVILLE - The University of Virginia will host the 2014 ACC Cross Country Championships Friday morning at Panorama Farms in Earlysville. It marks the third time the course has hosted the conference meet, as it was also home to the 2006 and 2007 championships.
The women's 6K race will begin at 10:00 a.m., with the men's race to follow at 10:45 a.m. Admission is free and the meet will be broadcast online on ESPN3 for the first time.
The 13th-ranked Virginia women seek their first ACC championship since 1982 as they compete in one of the most competitive fields in recent history. Six ACC teams are ranked in the top 30 of the national rankings, led by six-time defending conference champion Florida State at No. 12. The Seminoles are joined by the No. 13 Cavaliers, No. 15 North Carolina, No. 16 Syracuse, No. 18 NC State and No. 30 Boston College in the latest USTFCCCA national poll. Virginia last competed on Oct. 17, finishing ninth at the Wisconsin/adidas Invitational, a meet that featured 22 of the top 30 teams in the nation.
The No. 13 Cavalier men are looking for their first title since winning back-to-back championships in 2007 (the last time Panorama Farms hosted the ACC meet) and 2008. Reigning champion Syracuse is currently ranked No. 3 nationally and is one of four ranked teams in the meet, along with the No. 13 Cavaliers, No. 15 Florida State and No. 28 North Carolina. Virginia has not competed in four weeks, since a fourth place finish against an elite field at the Washington Invitational on Oct. 4.
The meet will also signify the cross country matchup between Virginia and Virginia Tech in the Commonwealth Clash, sponsored by Virginia529, the official college savings plan of University of Virginia Athletics. There are two points at stake in the Virginia529 Commonwealth Clash, the new point rivalry series between University of Virginia and Virginia Tech. The school that finishes higher in each race, men's and women's, will receive a point in the competition. Virginia leads the 2014-15 Commonwealth Clash, 2.5 to 0.
