CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- Members of the men’s and women’s Virginia track and field teams concluded fall training on Monday (Nov. 20) with the sixth annual team pentathlon.
On the men’s side, the Blue team defeated the Orange team, 273-233, while on the women’s side the Blue team edged the Orange team to win 162-161.
Junior Kelly McKee (Lenexa, Kan.) won the overall women’s title with 240 points, winning the standing triple jump (8.07m) and the between the legs forward throw (12.98m). Freshman Brittany Jones (Bloomfield, Conn.) won the standing long jump (2.61m), while freshman Halle Hazzard (Commack, N.Y.) won the 30m (4.32) and senior Carter Green (Ashland, Pa.) won the overhead back throw (15.45m).
Graduate student Caitlin Mautz (Doylestown, Pa.) set class records in the overhead back throw (14.10m) and between the legs forward throw (12.66m).
On the men’s side, graduate student Willem Geuskens (Antwerp, Belgium) won the overall individual title with 316 points, setting the graduate school record in points. He also recorded the graduate school class record in the overhead back throw (15.86m).
Sophomore Jordan Scott (Portmore, Jamaica) won the standing triple jump (9.87m- sophomore class record) and the standing long jump (3.25m-sophomore class record). Freshman Jordan Willis (Williamsburg, Va.) won the 30m (3.97), while junior Nace Plesko (Ljubljana,
Bouselli set a senior class record with his effort in the overhead back throw and in the between the legs forward throw (15.56m).
"It is an annual event we do just like others around the country,” director of track and field and cross country Bryan Fetzer said. “It's about competition. The events are not the norm for all those that compete. Some athletes favor certain event areas over others. The student-athletes compete for themselves as well as for one of two teams, Blue and Orange. Competitors are ‘drafted’ in a side and compete for that squad until leaving Grounds. New student-athletes are drafted by the upperclassmen on the current teams with the losing team from the year before having the first pick.
The Cavaliers will open the indoor track and field season at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa, on Jan. 19.
